Almost every second person in the UK has a practice of regular skipping breakfasts. Why do we do this? Sometimes we sleep too long and have no time for having breakfast before leaving our house. Some people believe that skipping breakfasts can help in wight loss, but this idea is absolutely incorrect. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and skipping breakfasts does not lead to anything positive. Moreover, according to famous British expert nutritionists Professor Tanya Byron and Amanda Ursell, who recently published their Kingsmill Breakfast Report, eating healthy breakfasts can help us to reduce negative effects of our daily stresses.

A research leaded by these two specialists showed that eating a good nutritious breakfast in the morning helps to boost our resistance to stresses and improve our mental functioning during the day. Professor Byron underlines that skipping breakfast or eating a poor one “..leads to substantially heightened stress levels and given the understanding of the role of stress in the deterioration of thinking, problem solving, focus, concentration and behaviour, has profound implications for everyone, adults and children alike.”

The experts reported that 59% of the people who were given a healthy and nutritious breakfast demonstrated increased performance and improvements when completing various mental agility and numerical reasoning tests. Byron and Ursell are convinced that having a good breakfast is the way to “…improve our daily functioning and general performance by ensuring that we have a wholegrain start to the day.” The specialists also point on the importance of developing a habit of having regular healthy breakfasts in children since their early ages. In particular, Byron and Ursell warn young moms against skipping breakfasts and becoming bad role models for their infants. The nutritionists recommend making time for having daily family breakfasts as a very favorable environment for child’s development.

Skipping breakfast is a common strategy for losing weight, but not a smart one. Many people believe that they will lose weight if they skip meals, but that just isn’t true. When you skip breakfast, you are likely to become tired when your brain and body run low on fuel- the body expects to be refueled a few times each day — starting with breakfast.
